FIRST REGIONAL SAFE HOUSE CELEBRATED FIRST ANNIVERSARY

With appropriate ceremony - one year from the opening of the First regional safe house situated in Palilula Municipality, was celebrated. According to Sladjana Zivkovic Kostic, manager of this institution, `Safe House` in Nis, during the last year was the safe place for 59 women and 52 children, victims of home domestic violence. Brankica Jankovic, state secretary in Ministry of labour, employment and social policy of the Government of the Republic of Serbia, emphasized that the Ministry will work again on creating the legal conditions for the women not to be and stay in safe houses, but in their own homes and that violent people should be legally persecuted. It is necessary to work on empowering women so that they could be more independent. Unfortunately, the fact is that safe houses in this moment must exist so that all the women in danger could have a place to be – said Mrs. Jankovic. As positive example she also stated great understanding of the traders, support of the volunteers and organization of the young people for this programme.

Member of City Council Bratislav Randjelovic emphasized that City of Nis will do anything for making financing the work of Safe House more stable. Plans for the next year are that this institution, that has already been active in good way for one year, go on with its work. Sladjana ZIvkovic Kostic manager of Safe House explained that the users during the stay in house had also had psychological support and that good cooperation with National service for employment was established. With the help of various programmes, work treatment and pre- qualification, during the visit of the stay in Safe House five women were employed on permanent basis.

On this occasion in the name of the authorities of Palilula Municipality Milos Stojkovic, president of Palilula Municipal Assembly and Zlatko Semic, member of Municipal Council were present.

The celebration of `first birthday` was also marked with programme of children choir `Vilenjaci` and giving acknowledgments to the institutions and organizations for the help and support in the work in Safe House in Nis.

Acknowledgments are given also to Nis City Municipalities: Palilula, Pantelej, Mediana, representative of the Embassy of Slovakia and honourable consul in Nis, KLER, Partnership for education and community development, `Vozd Karadjordje` and `Kole Rasic` elementary schools, Media Center Nis, SGB bank, OTP Bank, Kolo srpskih sestara, Rotary Clubs `Konstantin` and `Mediana`, Mr. Bricolage, Phillip Morris, DM, Cosmetic Plus, Off Theatre, SNS –Mediana, URS Women Forum, DS Women Forum of Municipal Council Mediana, Dental Clinic, `Nezavisnost` Police syndicate. For the successful cooperation it is issued the acknowledgement to the Institution for the education of young people and Center for social work `Sveti Sava` and celebration of Jubilee were supported by Pokret Treceg Doba, Dragana, Donji Matejevac, Todor restaurant and Amerikanac restaurant.
